The Story in Every Thread: Announcing the Launch of the Harris Family Tapestry
Today, I am incredibly proud to announce the launch of a project that has been years in the making: The Genetic and Genealogical Tapestry of Li Jean-Luc Harris.
This website is far more than a family tree. It’s an immersive, interactive experience designed to bring history to life. It was born from a deeply personal journey and a core belief that has guided my professional life: that our stories hold the power to empower. By weaving together genealogical records, deep DNA analysis, and the very human stories of the people who came before me, I hope to have created a new way to connect with the past.
This project traces my family’s lineage from the shores of modern Kent, back through the proud industrial valleys of Wales, and all the way to the ancient migrations of the Bronze Age. But more importantly, it seeks to honor the individuals—the pioneers, the survivors, the adventurers, and the everyday people—whose resilience is woven into my own story.
Begin your journey into the past here.
The Foundation of the Story: Two Kinds of Family
Every story has a beginning, and mine is built on the foundation of two very different, but equally important, families.
The genetic threads of this tapestry begin with my biological parents, David Ian Harris and Julie Anne Prewett. Their union in Thanet, Kent, is the point where the two major ancestral lines of this project converge. My father’s Harris line is deeply rooted in the post-war landscape of Kent and Essex, a story of English resilience. My mother’s Prewett line carries the legacy of a proud Welsh migration, a journey from the coal-mining valleys to the English coast. They provided the genetic map that makes this entire exploration possible.
However, a map is useless without a safe harbor from which to read it. That harbor was provided by my foster parents, Carol and John. After entering the care system at the age of ten, their home became the first place I experienced true stability. As I’ve written on the site, “…it was the first time I felt like someone was truly fighting for me, not just putting up with me.” Their unwavering support and love gave me the security and sense of self-worth to embark on this journey of discovery. This project is a testament to both the family I was born into and the family that chose me.
Stories from the Tapestry: Meeting the Ancestors
This website is built around the lives of the more than 1,180 individuals in my family tree. Through the “Ancestor Spotlights” and other features, you can meet some of the remarkable people who shaped this story:
- The Pioneer: In the 1840s, Thomas Sykes and his wife Catherine left Yorkshire for a new life in Canada, becoming pioneers in a new land. Their story is a classic tale of 19th-century migration and endurance.
- The Adventurer: Proving that not all journeys went west, Ivor Maurice Prewett took a bold leap and immigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1961, living to the remarkable age of 95.
- The Windfall Winner: Life can change in an instant, as it did for Stanley Lawrence Wilson in 1960 when he won a life-altering £100,000 in the football pools.
- The Welsh Migration: Trace the Prewett family from the industrial heartland of the Welsh valleys to the coast of Kent, a story of cultural and geographic transition that is central to my own identity.
A New Way to Experience History: Interactive Features
To bring these stories to life, I’ve integrated a range of interactive features that allow you to explore the data in a dynamic and personal way.
- The AI-Powered Exploration Hub: This is the most innovative part of the site.
- Chat with an Ancestor: Have a direct conversation with an AI persona of a key ancestor, like a WWII veteran or a Welsh coal miner, and ask them about their life.
- Consult the AI Genealogist: If you’re a fellow researcher, you can describe your own “brick wall,” and the AI will generate a custom research plan to help you.
- Explore a Year in History: Pick any year and receive a rich narrative of what life was like in Britain at that time.
- An Epic Timeline: Journey from a 450,000 BC megaflood that created the English Channel, through major genetic migrations, to key family events in the 20th and 21st centuries. You can filter the timeline to focus on genealogy, historical events, or deep ancestry.
- Geographic Journey: Trace the family’s movements across the globe on an interactive map. See the clusters of ancestors in Kent and London, the deep roots in Wales, and the branches that spread to Canada and Brazil.
- Data-Driven Insights: For those who love statistics, you can explore charts on ancestral occupations, see how family sizes have changed over generations, and view the geographic distribution of the family at a glance.
- A Multi-Layered DNA Story: Go beyond a simple ethnicity estimate. The site breaks down my genetic story into distinct historical epochs—from the foundational migrations of the Bronze Age to the melting pot of the Roman and Viking eras.
This project is an invitation to see history on a human scale. It’s a testament to the fact that every family tree, when you look closely, is filled with extraordinary stories of resilience, change, and survival. I hope that by exploring this tapestry, you might feel inspired to explore your own.
